Q&A: Vince Brearey Managing director operations, Offset Print & Packaging

Vince has spent 30 years in print after starting out as an assistant in a local trade printer before moving into cartons. He completed his apprenticeship 28 years ago. He’s married with a 14-year-old daughter, who he says is “very keen to become a printer herself!”

Why did you get into printing?
I was going out with a girl whose father owned a printers and wanted some holiday cover, so I went in and never looked back

What would be your dream job?
Andi Peters’ job on Good Morning Britain… What a job that man has!

What is your dream bit of kit?
Koenig & Bauer 145 with full logistics and SPC, but a very close second is our Koenig & Bauer 106

Savoury

Who or what do you hate the most?
Piers Morgan – why can that man not let people answer the questions he has just asked?

Who do you admire most in the industry?
The list is long and I do not want to flatter them all, but I should mention our chairman Hugh Jarvis and John Monks, BPIF Cartons honorary president

What is your favourite phrase or saying?
I could not possibly put that down in print!

What’s your greatest fear?
Heights

What is your greatest luxury in life?
Holidays

What is the strangest job you’ve ever done?
Pushing trays of lemon meringue pies into an oven all day

What is your greatest ambition?
To ensure we keep growing the business and provide stable, secure employment for our workforce

What piece of kit would you like to see invented?
A machine that prints, die-cuts and glues in one pass with robot packers!

Far too many to mention

At work on a beach in Barbados

What’s your worst fashion disaster?
A pink suit for a wedding, which was a dare

What is the worst kind of print?
Print for people who do not pay their bills

What was the best business deal that you’ve pulled off?
Buying into Offset Print & Packaging

What advice would you give to your teenage self?
There is no rush, keep on going and with hard work you will hopefully succeed

How would you like to be remembered?
As a good bloke who was always fair

Life is…?
At present, very grim for a lot of people especially those who have lost loved ones, but by following the lockdown rules, we will beat Covid-19 together and then life will definitely be better
