Q&A: Tony Gill Chief executive Mosaic Group

Tony has spent 40 years in the industry, he’s been married to Jane for 32 years and their daughter Charlotte works for Twentysix Digital in Leeds. His hobbies include walking and travelling with his wife, as well as golf and fishing

What is your nickname? 

Papa G

Why did you get into printing? 

I started with Wm Guppy paper merchants in Leeds as a 15-year-old

What would be your dream job? 

Maybe something involving mentoring young school leavers who don’t believe in themselves

What is your dream bit of kit? 

A two-seater 1940s Bentley convertible with a fully stocked picnic hamper in the boot, dogs on the back seat (and my daughter, she will be mad if I miss her out) and my wife by my side

Who or what do you hate the most? 

Bad manners and rudeness and people who think they are better just because they have a few pound more in their pocket. We are all equal

Who do you admire most in print?

It’s got to be Paddy Crean CEO of Paragon. He’s rammed full of talent and business instinct. I had the pleasure of working with him many years ago

Cat or dog, or…? 

I have two Australian red labradoodles called Ted and Jo so it’s got to be dogs

What is your greatest ambition? 

To value what I have and be content

Who or what makes you laugh? 

Norman Wisdom

Most embarrassing moment?

Sat on the train to London on the loo to realise I hadn’t mastered the automatic door locking system, to my horror the door opened mid ablutions. Very embarrassing

What was your childhood obsession? 

Biscuits

What is the worst kind of print? 

Print that doesn’t work, no ROI. Print should be quality and it should deliver a strong response

What was the best business deal that you’ve pulled off? 

Taking full control of Mosaic and buying out my 50% partner

What advice would you give to your teenage self? 

Everybody told me not to do it and my advice would be go for it follow your dreams, they did come true
