Q&A: Danny Kirk Director, Push Print London

Danny has spent 27 years in the “wonderful world of print”, a whopping 22 of them being in sales. He’s married with three boys, and his interests include managing his son’s football team and “trying to fit in my hobbies of running and golf somewhere in between”.

What is your nickname?

With a surname of Kirk there really is only one: ‘Captain’. But if you ask the boys in production they may have something a little more colourful

Why did you get into printing?

I was designing and selling kitchens when I was 19 and my uncle asked if I would be interested in joining him in print. It seemed to be the right thing to do 27 years ago

What would be your dream job?

Perhaps a part-time job that still pays the bills. Then I could see the kids a lot more

What is your dream bit of kit?

The Heidelberg CX 102 we have here at Push comes very close

What would you most like to print?

I have been very lucky to have printed some beautiful books over the years; a back catalogue of all them would be nice

Born in 1969 it has to be Star Wars

Who or what do you hate the most?

I’m a very laid-back person so don’t hate many things – except commuting on Abellio Greater Anglia trains

Who do you admire most in print?

You have to admire any company that is still here. To survive the last 10 years in a shrinking market has been tough

What is your favourite album?

I cannot get past INXS’ Greatest Hits at the moment

What is your greatest luxury in life?

Having an hour to do absolutely nothing

Who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with?

Natalie Portman. We can talk about how she was the only good thing in the newer Star Wars films

Most embarrassing moment?

Let’s just say: hotel – sleep walking – not wearing much!

Naples, Florida. People who know me are sick of me talking about this place

What’s your worst fashion disaster?

I’m a walking fashion disaster

Who would be your favourite party guests?

Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Freddie Mercury, Michael Hutchence, Bruce Lee, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Prince. Come back guys for one last party!

Where would you go if you could time-travel?

Has to be the future, just look at the technology in print alone over the past 20 years

What was your childhood obsession?

I’ve always been very hands on so I guess this is why I enjoy working with designers to make the end result the very best it can be

What is the worst kind of print?

Digital print. Yes, I know digital is really, really good. But it’s not litho

What was the best business deal that you’ve pulled off?

Getting my wife to marry me was the best bit of business I ever did!

How would you like to be remembered?

The nicest man in print

Life is…?

Working hard and playing hard. And looking after the ones you love
