Q&A: Monica Moody, sales manager, Minuteman Press Coventry

Monica says that she thinks being Italian helps with sales: “If you can understand my accent, but I have improved it since marrying an Englishman and living in this country since 1995.

In this time I also had two children a few dogs and a hamster too, no cats, several Konicas and Xeroxes (more Xeroxes than Konicas) but only one Ricoh over the 15 years I have been running Minuteman Press in Coventry with my husband”.

What is your nickname?  

No one ever dared give me a nickname, or they may have done it behind my back

Why did you get into printing? 

I was made redundant and my husband the day after offered me a desk at the shop all singing and dancing with my own email, computer and mobile phone… so I thought I would give it a go

What would be your dream job? 

As long as I deal with people a lot and it is busy, I am happy. However, if I could dream it would have to be something to do with the sea and fishes – a marine biologist

What is your dream bit of kit?

A pressure cooker, so quick to cook... ah, printing wise I like a Duplo cutter-creaser-perforator. Again it would make our life much easier

What is your favourite film?

Bridget Jones – The Edge of Reason. It reminds me of me in my early 30s

What is your favourite TV programme?  

The Americans

Savoury

Who or what do you dislike the most? 

Liver. I cannot eat it smell it or even look at it. Pure evil

What is your favourite phrase or saying? 

'Tomorrow is another day' 

What is your favourite album? 

Adele 21

What is your favourite book/what book are you reading at the moment?

My favourite is The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, I read it a long time ago and loved it. What I'm reading now is L’amica geniale by Elena Ferrante, a present from my best friend

Dog

What is your greatest luxury in life?

Holidays. It is just great to be able to pack a suitcase and travel

What is the strangest job you’ve ever done?

Printing felt pretty strange and alien to me at the beginning

Who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with? 

If I had food and wine readily available, my husband. If not someone more practical so he could eventually provide wine, food and shelter

What is your greatest ambition? 

To make it to 100 without losing my marbles

What’s your greatest fear?  

I am not scared of much, but I fear losing people I love

Where would you like to be right now?  

Thailand

What’s your worst fashion disaster? 

You name it – I am not very fashion-savvy – a poor example of an Italian. I went to work with two different shoes on once

Which superpower would you like to have? 

To be invisible

Who would be your favourite party guests?

I'm not keen on parties – too many people

Where would you go if you could time-travel?  

For sure in the future at least 300 years. Wow, it would be mind-blowing

What is the worst kind of print?  

When I can still see crop marks lurking in the corner

What was the best business deal that you’ve pulled off?  

During Covid we kept open and landed a contract from America to print all sort of stationery items, send them to Amazon and store them. A gift that kept on giving

What advice would you give to your teenage self?

Not to be arrogant

How would you like to be remembered?  

Strong and a bit loopy
