Q&A: Dan Dean Consultant, B&B Press Rotherham

Dan is B&B’s former business development director and retired at the end of last year after a whopping 46 years in print, starting as an apprentice compositor. His hobbies include golf (10 handicap) and Harley-Davidson motorcycles. He’s married with two daughters and twin granddaughters

Why did you get into printing?
I wanted to be a graphic designer and noticed a job for a compositor and in my ignorance thought they were nearly the same thing! How wrong could I be?

What would be your dream job?
A caddie on the European golf tour with a winning player

Who would play you in a movie about your life?  
Jeff Goldblum would be tall enough

What is your dream bit of kit?
Harley Electra Glide Ultra Classic CVO

What would you most like to print?   
Anything as long as it’s on our brilliant LED UV presses giving amazing results

What is your favourite film?  
Wild Hogs

Who or what do you hate the most?
Lies and having my hair pulled

Who do you admire most in the industry?
It’s a little sycophantic but Barry Liversidge and Nigel Tolley here at B&B Press, who together have steered the good ship B&B Press brilliantly

What is your favourite book?
Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari, which I’m now reading for the third time.Mind blowing!

Cat or dog, or…?
Dog every time

What is your greatest luxury in life?
A special gin with Fevertree tonic and lashings of ice and cucumber

What is the strangest job you have ever done?
Back in my Garnett days, we were printing an art photography magazine with a feature on nudes. My MD turned bright blue and asked me to Letraset black blobs over the naughty bits, which we printed without telling the customer. Different days.

What is your greatest ambition?
To be fit and active for as long as possible to enjoy life with my granddaughters, Daisy and Violet

What’s your greatest fear?  
The mess that we have created voting for Brexit. I feel sorry that our children will not enjoy the relationship with Europe that we have benefited from

Which celebrity would you like to get out of here? Why?
All of them, what a total waste of space and time

Most embarrassing moment?
Taking some clients out to a fancy restaurant and sitting on my chair which disintegrated under me. I stood up and collected all the bits and handed them to a laughing waitress

Where would you like to be now?  
On Route 66 with the sun on my back

What’s your worst fashion disaster?
Stack heel shoes, I’m 6ft 6in without them

Where would you go if you could time-travel?  
I’d like to go forward 30 years and then come back to let everyone know what we are doing wrong

What advice would you give to your teenage self?
Always do what you know is the right thing

How would you like to be remembered?  
Fair, honest, reliable, customer focused above all else
