Tetra Pak Wrexham consultation may stop production and halve workforce

Tetra Pak is considering stopping production at its Wrexham factory in a move that could make 150 staff redundant.

Yesterday, the food packaging company entered into a consultation period with staff that will last "at least 90 days".

The company is looking to retain around 135 jobs at the facility, with staff at the site accounting for around half of its UK workforce.

Tetra Pak said it faces market changes that include many products now being offered in other formats as well as cartons.

It has replaced these losses by supplying export markets from the site, but said that from 2011, Wrexham will no longer be required to support these markets as local factories can now provide for their own needs.

It added that while there are many opportunities within the UK and Irish markets, these volumes alone cannot sustain dedicated production in Wrexham.

A spokesman for the business confirmed that the move does not mean the company will look to leave the site.

He said: "We will stay here, there is no doubt that we will continue to have a site here in Wrexham.

"It is a very tough time and we are concentrating on looking after our people at the moment."

Rik Jacobs, managing director for the UK and Ireland, said: "The decision to consult on Wrexham's future has been an extremely difficult one, but is necessary to ensure our continued competitiveness.

"If the proposal to close production in Wrexham goes forward, regrettably there will be significant restructuring and job losses."

He added that if the proposal is implemented, the company will provide outplacement support and job advice for all affected employees.
