Teachers visit Polestar Sheffield ahead of diploma introduction

Polestar Sheffield has opened its doors to offer secondary school teachers a full-day's training course in various aspects of the printing process.

The initiative came ahead of the introduction of the industry-linked diploma in Manufacturing and Product Design (MPD) for 14- to 19-year-olds, which will be launched this September.

Six teachers took part in the day, which centred on the printer's 'Print Dynamics' on-line training programme.

The course, which spans gravure, flexographic, web offset and screen printing, aimed to help teachers to prepare for the new diploma that will be delivered by schools, colleges and businesses.

Andy Reynoldson, managing director of Polestar Sheffield, said that by supporting the diploma, the company hoped it could "help teachers to develop an interest among their students in the industry and inspire some of them to want to join us".

In addition to print, the Manufacturing and Product Design course will cover sectors including the automotive, textiles and food and drink market.

Neil Robinson, careers and sector image manager at Proskills, said participation from companies such as Polestar was imperative to help the diploma succeed.

"This will have a big impact on the talents and ambitions of tomorrow’s workforce, and on attracting people into manufacturing industries.

"Companies like Polestar recognise the importance of this and I would encourage more to follow their example."
