Royal Mail and CWU 'close to deal'

Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union (CWU) have reportedly moved closer to completing a deal to modernise the postal service, bringing to an end a long-running chapter of walkouts, job cuts and often bitter negotiations.

According to preliminary reports from Sky News, a draft agreement will be put to the CWU later this week, with both parties keen on closing a deal sooner rather than later.

The closing months of 2009 were characterised by repeated strikes within the service in protest at the operator's modernisation plans and its effect on staff.

In January of this year, Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier announced he was leaving the postal operator in 2010 in order to take over the same position at ITV.

Robert Keitch, chief of membership and brand at the DMA, said that the direct marketing body was doing its best to establish the facts as details at this point were sketchy.

"If something is to happen this week, I wait with baited breath," he said.
