Evolutionprint's winning entry evolved out of a collaboration between the printer and creative agency Attik, resulting in a truly innovative product. The Noise Five book, the latest in Attik's series of experimental design books, is a celebration of all that's possible in print, including some things that were only achieved through experimentation. The judges clearly liked the result, which combined a number of printing and finishing techniques to maximum effect. The entire book was printed on a B2 six-colour Komori Lithrone, using Kodak Electra XD thermal plates imaged on Evolutionprint's Kodak Lotem 800 II Quantum platesetter. A mix of four-colour process, four-colour fluorescents, four-colour metallics underpinned with silver with sealer run separately, and 26 different spot colours, was used. A selection of neutral and mirror finish gloss and matt seals also featured for different sections as specified, including gloss varnish on top of matt seal. No compromises were made during the production process, throughout which a member of Attik's team had an office at Evolutionprint's site, overseeing more than 90 press passes, changing and tweaking where necessary. For the paper, nine different stocks, ranging in weight from 100gsm-200gsm, were chosen, plus translucents, end-papers and a dust cover. Once printed, all of the sheets had to be trimmed to give correct binding margins prior to folding. All the sheets were folded at Evolutionprint, before being pre-collated into 16pp binding sections and sent to external suppliers for binding. On return, end-papers were folded and dust jackets applied, prior to shrinkwrapping and mailing. The book, which was originally launched in Leeds, has recently been unveiled in New York and San Francisco and is due to be catalogued for reference in the British Library.
