PrintWeek Awards: Environmental Company of the Year - Park Communications

This has become one of the most hotly contested categories, as environmental matters rise ever higher on the list of specifications from buyers and the public.

However, Park rose above the competition with an environmental performance that one judge said surpassed every entry he had seen in the history of the category – high praise indeed. The company has attained the full list of eco accreditations and has gone one step further by working with the Eco Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) to constantly improve and test its procedures and systems. The latter requires the company to produce a publicly available statement on eco performance, backed up by concrete measurements of performance and commitments for further improvements to be made. The company recognises the importance of staff training in meeting these targets, and British Standards Institute training was given to four members of staff in key areas so they could ensure compliance with standards and feed any issues into the company’s environmental and quality management systems. It all seems to be paying off, with electricity consumption reduced by 7.5% per impression, water usage by 37% and landfill waste by 42% ranking high among the company’s achievements in the past 12 months.

Newsprinters says it aims to be the best newspaper manufacturer in the world and it sees fulfilling its environmental obligations as a key part of that ambition. Already recognized by Vision in Print as ‘Environmental Leaders’ following BPIF audits, the company is pushing on with ISO 14001 and a host of projects including the launch of employee engagement schemes and assessment of press-operating energy consumption to identify optimum operating conditions.
