Monotype event to showcase archive

Type aficionados will have the chance to see rare items from the Monotype and Linotype archives at an exhibition in London later this month.

The exhibit, Pencil to Pixel, is being organised by Monotype Imaging and was inspired by the success of GF Smith’s Beauty in the Making event earlier this year, which included a set of Eric Gill’s original drawings for Gill Sans.

"That made us realise there’s a need for it, and it’s our duty to put these materials on display," said Monotype marketing manager James Fooks-Bale.

"We’ve selected a few type designs we think people will want to see, including Times New Roman and Times Roman from Monotype and Linotype, and Gill’s Joanna. There will also be archive issues of the Monotype Recorder," he added.

The exhibition is being supported by GF Smith, Pureprint, Eye magazine, D&AD, The Drum and the University of Reading.

It opens on 16 November and then runs from 19 to 23 November, at Metropolitan Wharf in London.

Tickets are free, and there will also be guided tours by Monotype’s UK type director Dan Rhatigan and head of typography Robin Nicholas.
