Linx Printing Technologies invests 1m in ink manufacturing facility

Cambridgeshire-based Linx Printing Technologies has invested 1m in an ink manufacturing facility at its St Ives headquarters, following a fire that damaged the previous set-up in June last year.

The fire and subsequent rebuild has enabled the company to redesign the facility, taking into account lean manufacturing techniques, as well as advanced safety features.

Linx said the redesign along lean manufacturing lines had enabled "significant time savings, reduced inventory and streamlined despatch".

Meanwhile, the cornerstone of the site's new fire suppression system is a £300,000 targetted sprinkler system, which directs water only to the section of the building where it is needed.

The sprinkler system draws water from a 473,000-litre tank and mixes it with a fire suppressant foam before directing it to the sprinkler heads.

Linx has also invested in a volumetric filling machine - a modular system that performs changeovers between products and improves mixing technology.

Tony Stafford, chief financial officer at Linx, said: "At the height of the recession, we were given the green light on a £1m investment that secures Linx’s future as a market leader in providing quality, on-time, made-to-order products to customers around the globe.

"Our new ink plant offers the best of both worlds – continuity with existing good practice, allied to investment in the best possible filling and protective technologies."

The rebuild follows a fire at the site in June 2009, which damaged 30% of the building in Cambridgeshire.
