Do you know of any trade Braille printers? We print flat sheets for the healthcare sector and have a request for Braille. We know some of the large organisations that provide a full service, but as we may share some of the same clients we would rather find a trade supplier if possible. Any assistance would be appreciated.

This is a good opportunity to dust off and update my list of Braille specialists. Long-standing stalwarts in this field include Pia (0844 500 6450) and Scottish Braille Press (0131 662 4445). I’ve checked and Sessions of York under the new ownership of Paragon Print & Packaging still provides a Braille service (08442 430686). And MPH Accessible Media in Gateshead offers transcription and printing services (0191 438606). A newer entrant in the field, and quite possibly fitting your ‘trade’ requirement rather nicely, is Coatings Direct, part of the Olro Group (01284 767511). The company has added Braille to its services after developing a special high-build coating that is prominent enough to be suitable for Braille. It was used by Royal Mail last year on a commemorative sheet related to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It also occurs to me that we’ve written about various large-format inkjet machines that have Braille printing capability, but I’m not aware of anyone providing a Braille service using this sort of kit – if there’s anyone out there doing such a thing, or any other Braille providers that I should include on my list, please do get in touch.
