At a glittering event at London’s Park Lane Hilton last night, the newspaper, which relaunched as a Berliner format in September 2005 following a £100m investment in new presses, scooped five of the 17 awards up for grabs.
The Guardian Print Centre was named Newspaper Printer of the Year, edging out the highly commended Mortons Print and Newsquest Oxford, which was commended.
Trafford Park Printers, which prints northern editions of The Guardian, won the Most Outstanding Use of Colour award for its production of the paper.
Guardian News & Media was named Environmental Newspaper Company of the Year for its ‘Living our Values’ scheme, while The Guardian was named National Newspaper of the Year in both the weekday and weekend categories.
At an event attended by around 600 people, Johnston Press chief executive Tim Bowdler, who has led a print investment programme worth more than £110m in recent years, was named Personality of the Year.
Elsewhere, The Irish News, which moved from a Berliner to a tabloid format in early 2005 after building a £15m plant in Belfast, was named Newspaper of the Year. The Oxford Times won the Weekly Newspaper of the Year award.
