GI Direct installs energy saving chiller equipment for web offset presses

Direct mail printer GI Direct has installed new chiller equipment that it said has delivered annual cost savings of 40% and reduced its annual energy usage and carbon emission by 35%.

The chiller equipment previously used by the company to supply cold water for the chill rollers used on Zirkon 9620 24pp inline web offset presses was identified as a high user of electricity.

The company decided to replace the equipment, and secured an interest-free loan from the Carbon Trust, which contributed a percentage towards the project.

The Carbon Trust offers business loans from £3,000 - £100,000, depending on the expected CO2 savings made by a project. A total of £1,000 of loan can be given for every 2.5 tonnes of CO2 saved per annum.

Carl Henson, engineering manager, said the reason for the installation was to replace the company's existing equipment which was ageing and more expensive to maintain.

He said: "We wanted something that was more modern and by installing the chiller equipment, we also met one of our key objectives for ISO 14001."

He added that the chiller had given the company "immediate cost and energy savings", as they have been designed with low sound levels, energy efficiency and cost effectiveness.
