Following the Shop Direct Group (SDG) awarding its print work to RR Donnelley in January 2011, the US-based print and BPO giant has presented Union and staff representatives with the updated proposed measures on how it would affect staff at sister company Transactis.
Alison Jones, Unite regional officer, said the company confirmed that as a result of the proposed measures, 209 employees are to be placed at risk of redundancy.
She said: "The company has stated that it proposes the first phase regarding any redundancies, affecting approximately 63 employees, would take place in July.
"The reason for the proposed redundancies is predominately due to RR Donnelley proposing to move the work to its Gateshead & Tewkesbury sites."
She said that unions Unite and USDAW are currently involved in the consultation process and have stated that they will do all they can during this period to represent their members' interests.
Union representatives stated that during the TUPE consultation, they were "made aware of the measures connected to the transfer and the devastating affect this would have on our members".
However, they said that under the TUPE consultation the company's obligation was only to "consult" on the measures they proposed to take with employees post-transfer.
"Previously we could not explore in detail any proposals surrounding the redundancies and offer counter proposals, but now that we are in this consultation period, then every avenue will be explored."
Transactis said it intended to accept an offer from RR Donnelley for its Document Services, Reprographics and Procurement businesses in January 2011.
At the time, RR Donnelley claimed it had in fact been awarded a "multimillion dollar, multi-year contract" by SDG.
SDG, which was formed through the merger of Shop Direct and Littlewoods, is a sister company of Transactis under the holding company March UK.
Transactis, formerly CDMS, was previously the in-house print and mail division of Littlewoods, which has been the main customer of the Liverpool site since its inception in 2003.
RR Donnelley and Transactis were unavailable to comment.
