The CIPS award also acknowledges the company’s ability to establish the purchase and supply business function as a standalone competitive advantage for the organisation and its clients.
Communisis underwent an audit, interview and modular assessment process to demonstrate "excellence" in 16 different areas that included strategic intent, people performance, risk assessment and continuity planning.
Alan Martin, group purchasing director at Communisis said the award demonstrates that Communisis "is home to the most trustworthy and profit-enhancing supply and purchasing systems on the market".
"This is an area of the business that we value extremely highly and to receive such a highly coveted industry award is a true testament to the hard work that we have put into establishing ourselves as an industry leader," he added.
For a company to be awarded CIPS gold certification it needs to hold silver certification in the area. Other businesses with the certification include BBC, Zurich Financial Services, and PriceWaterhouse Coopers.
David Noble, chief executive of CIPS, said: "Communisis were able to show robust evidence in all 16 modules – innovation, creativity, leadership, customer engagement, risk awareness, willingness to learn and a culture of continuous improvement.
"Their sourcing processes are world class, and we’re pleased that Communisis have joined an elite group of Gold Certification clients offering an excellent service."
