Judges Kim Wilson, head of print at McCann Erickson, Pentagram Design’s Jane Pluer, Traffic Design Consultant’s Chris Smith, and Jon Honeywill, creative director of marketing agency Black Sun, recognised the piece as "a seemingly simple piece that has been developed into a beautiful brochure by innovative design elements and good choice of material".
Studio Brochure no 3 showcases London-based design house Studio Emmi’s works using Antalis McNaughton’s Pop’Set Riviera Blue and Spring Green 240gsm, Fawn and Claro Silk papers with "nicely thought out detail, typography and imagery", accordingly to the judges. The panel declared the piece "a great example of an agency being different".
The event, which took place at Warwick Castle and for the first time included 150 printers and highly commended designers, recognised three new categories: best in digital print, people’s choice, and student designer of the year.
The public voted RNIB’s Annual Review 2010/2011, printed by Stabur Graphics, as its favourite for the online people’s choice award.
University Campus Suffolk put forward a winning design for Antalis McNaughton’s 2013 calendar, named Metamorphosis. Five students collaborated to create a piece that used "good imagery, reflecting the idea that paper can be anything", according to judges.
Plan 4 Print produced Best in Digital Print winners Studio Output’s Light Heart Dark Mind brochure, which used a collection of Rives Tradition Bright, 250gsm White, Curious Collection Metallic and Ice Silver 120gsm to create what judges called a "tactile and high end piece".
Monocle Magazine created its Winter lifestyle piece Monocle Alpino using self-cover Cyclus Offset 80gsm that judges said "breaks the rules" to take a "fresh and innovative approach that is beautifully and intelligently designed."
Other winners included designer M-Four’s board report for Manchester City Council "Keeping the spotlight on older people", King’s College School of Medicine’s corporate brochure designed by Powell Allen, direct mail piece Lynne Forsyth Mailer by Tayburn, MARK's Rainy City Stories Stationery for Manchester Literature Festival and Made Thought’s Design Miami/2011 catalogue.
The Review has been running for 22 years celebrating design talent across the printing industry and innovative use of paper within original creations. Previously, winners have been taken on exclusive long weekends to Monico, Venice and Gleneagles to accept their prizes.
Antalis McNaughton communication manager Samantha Brown said: "We wanted to champion all involved in the design process to showcase the different printing techniques and how they contribute to a piece."
Marketing director Richard Champion added: "Rather than flying for a long weekend, we wanted to have a 'posh' evening dinner with entertainment. I was pleased that so many significant printers and designers were able to make the event on a Friday evening in June and we have received really positive feedback, so I think we will keep the event local and invite a bigger audience again next year."
