160pp Lithoman sold

A very special deal struck at drupa has delighted Manroland Web Systems: Essen-based company WKS Druckholding has ordered the world's largest commercial web press from the newly founded Augsburg-based printing machine manufacturer.

The twin-web, 80pp Lithoman ordered by WKS has a total paper web width of 4.5m. The coupling of the two systems provides a configuration of 160pp, making it one of a kind. However, this was not a key factor behind the investment.

The new machine will shortly be in operation alongside a total of eight Manroland web presses of 48 to 80 pages.

"We are installing a machine that can do things that others simply can’t," explained Ralph Dittmann, managing director at WKS. The company is also working with Manroland on the development of folders.

Dittmann said he is working on the assumption that print market consolidation will continue, and for that reason intends to reduce costs further. "From a unit cost point of view, only the large machines make sense", he said.

The new Lithoman replaces an older 32pp web press at WKS with a capacity seven times greater than the previous system in the production of magazines, catalogues and supplements.

Dittmann explained that he ultimately opted for the Manroland machine due to a long-standing association with the manufacturer’s presses.

"Collaboration with Manroland Web Systems has paid off for us, and, in operation, the Lithoman systems have been a real boon," confirmed Dittman.

Nevertheless he was adamant that the industry needed two strong web press suppliers.
