"Print has a healthy future". Just thought I'd share the words of Wired UK's editor David Rowan. I had a quick chat with him at the PPA conference yesterday and that was the first thing he said when I introduced myself as "Jo from PrintWeek".
Naturally, Rowan was clutching an iPad at the time, and I can report that his was gleaming and fingerprint-free, unlike the one I had my grubby paws on at the London Book Fair.
I was interested to have a word with him because Wired is a perfect example of a magazine title that differentiates itself through paper choice(s) and the use of special colours and effects. Whereas an iPad or other tablet device is always RGB, albeit in fantastic quality.
The simple answer according to Rowan is that whatever the "device" be that print or electronic media, you have to make the most of what it offers. Blindingly obvious, but very true.
Even better, the latest stats coming out of the States show that sales of iPads and other devices of this ilk are likely to add to, rather than subtract from, the audience of traditional magazines.
