Leading the news across print, broadcast and online media, trending on Twitter – yes, it’s confirmation that old bones found in the less-than-thrilling environment of a Leicester car park are indeed those of Richard III! What, you are no doubt asking, does this have to do with print? Nothing and everything. Now is the time for proactive printcos to swing into action, to help Leicester City Council and the University of Leicester capitalise on this amazing find, and the huge amount of interest in it. At the very least I expect visitors to the city to be able to buy a postcard depicting the extraordinary image of the king’s footless skeleton. The photo is practically perfect for such use. How about some sort of pictorial wrap for the car park area itself, telling the story of how the archaeologists came to make this find? All-weather information boards will also be required, of course. I love the fact that way back in 2009, prior to the dig, Philippa Langley of the Richard III Society got goosebumps when walking in the car park on a hot day: “I walked past a particular spot and absolutely knew I was walking on his grave.” So maybe there’s a new leaflet to be printed, Ghostly Walks Around Leicester. And surely there’s a book to be written about what is an incredible story. Perhaps a reprint will be on the cards for Josephine Tey’s The Daughter of Time, too. During a Twitter-based brainstorm on this topic yesterday, various suggestions were made for amusing t-shirts and other items. John Scott at Mauve Group suggested “I parked on Richard” t-shirts and “pay your parking fee to avoid the wrath or Richard” signage. PrintMAX UK chipped in with this amended signage idea. And a hat tip goes to Fujifilm’s Mark Stephenson for this alternative parking ticket design. Print, whether serious or silly, really will bring this latest chapter in the story of Richard III to life. PS And scientists used 3D printing to create a new model of Richard's face and head.
