Paper mill opens in UK, shock. That Palm Paper has constructed "Europe's most advanced newsprint mill", and the largest such paper machine in the world to boot, here on the small island is great news, as is the fact that construction of this €500m investment appears to have gone swimmingly with the machine starting production three weeks ahead of schedule. A round of applause, please, for all involved in the build and start-up phase.
UK mill news has tended towards the depressing in recent times, my back of an envelope calculation puts the number of mill closures over the past five years at 17. So the Palm investment, along with the creation of some 150 jobs, is to be celebrated.
Hopefully a fact-finding tour to beautiful North Norfolk can be arranged in due course to see this new facility in action. I know Palm has a combined heat and power unit at its Eltmann mill in Germany, but I'm not clear what the energy strategy is at King's Lynn and am keen to find out more, especially in light of those recent comments from the Guardian about paper purchasing decisions potentially being swayed by carbon footprint figures.
