It's Earth Day today, as anyone who's used Google this morning cannot fail to be aware - the day is marked by a Google Doodle depicting a vibrant forest scene.
I was amazed to learn that the event is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and thinking back to the 1970s it was a piece of extreme far-sightedness by US Senator Gaylord Nelson [an eye-catching name if ever there was one...] to set the thing up. Earth Day is lauded as "the beginning of the modern environmental movement".
This year the organisers expect that some 1.5bn people across almost 200 countries worldwide will engage in Earth Day "acts of green". A printer or two will surely be among them. Blackwell Print of Great Yarmouth, for example, will be exhibiting its FSC and PEFC printing capabilities at Deepdale Farm on the beautiful North Norfolk Coast, which is hosting a day of eco-events featuring local businesses. Wish I was there.
I'd be interested to hear from others in the industry who are up to something specific to this event, so please get in touch.
For those who haven't planned any active engagement, Earth Day still comes as a useful reminder to brush up on those positive messages about print production, not least the virtuous circle of properly managed papermaking.
