Are your facilities working hard enough? Just for a change, I'm not talking about working hard in terms of sheets per hour or jobs on the van. I mean in terms of showing off print's jaunty side, and promoting your people and brand in your own space. A few weeks ago I visited Axel Springer's Hamburg print plant. It was an interesting trip in all sorts of ways, not least due to the firm's plans to use hybrid newspaper printing in a big way. While walking around the facility one couldn't fail to notice a series of large-format wall graphics adorning various rooms and passageways – not just reception or the obvious public bits. They even had a sort of mini-museum with a display cabinet showing how their production technology had changed, along with a series of notable front pages. The wall graphics featured workers from various parts of production (here's an example) and they really looked great. Elsewhere, I spotted a pillar cleverly clothed in a design based on newspaper plates. If you haven't done so already, why not consider using some of your own wall space for some nice graphics? It shouldn't cost a fortune and will have the quadruple benefit of generating a bit of print, showcasing the visual appeal of printed materials, engaging your people in a fun project, and all while highlighting your company's personality.
