Had been expecting some major news to break this morning. News duly arrived, but in a different form to what was anticipated. Communisis’ BT contract win is precisely the sort of deal the group wants to cement its ambitions to be “last iceman” and market leader in the highly-specialised world of transactional printing. Despite the obvious decline in volumes of traditional print bills, such contracts are still pretty peppy. One also wonders what RR Donnelley will do now about this imminent gap in forward loading? At the time of typing no comment had been forthcoming. Other large contracts of this ilk are also in play at the moment, it will be significant to see where the work ends up. Having visited Communisis’ Speke site fairly recently, it’s easy to see how BT would have been impressed with the facilities on offer and the benefits of a full-colour, white paper solution. This additional work could be a stepping stone to the mooted expansion of the plant, or even a second facility, as mentioned by Communisis technical chief Chris Ingham. Definitely a statement of intent (sorry) from Communisis.
