The Displayline system has been installed at Delta’s Waltham Cross facility, which also houses its EFI Nozomi single-pass inkjet printer – also the first in the UK when it was installed.
The new Displayline was supplied by Finishline Machinery, the UK and Ireland sales agent for Lamina System and Bickers.
Finishline owner Neil Thayer said it was the result of a collaboration with Delta to develop a device that would reduce the amount of manual labour required when finishing FSDU units.
“It’s a folder-gluer but with a difference,” he explained. “It can fold in different directions, from the back and from the middle, and the folds can also be angled, all in a single pass,” he explained.
Thayer said the Displayline’s USP was the ability to apply hot melt glue, and then close bespoke flaps within the various shapes used in the body of a typical display unit. It uses a combination of repositionable folding flaps, glue guns, and rising suction cups. It is shown in operation below.
“There isn’t, as far as I know, another machine out there that can do this,” he added.
It was also decided that hand feeding was the most practical option.
“It is simple but effective, and a lot of thought has gone into it, even down to the feeder.”
The Displayline was installed two months ago. It is a 34.16 model which equates to 3.4m wide and 1.6m depth.
The size and number of glue guns can be configured according to requirements, with a ballpark price of around £230,000.
Delta Group chief operating officer Martin Shipp said the £77m turnover business was “always keen to look at new innovation on how we can improve upon speed, quality and cost”.
“This investment also aligns to our Delta Net Zero strategy with less power consumption than the current process. Lamina were the ones to deliver for us!” he added.
He said he was pleased to continue Delta Group’s long-standing relationship with Thayer and the team at Sweden-based Lamina System.
