Royal Adhesives shows mercury-free doming system at Fespa

Royal Adhesives & Sealants Canada is demonstrating the benefits of its two-component mercury-free E-Dome 8E-455 fast-curing resin system on its streamlined Q-Gear 3400 XYZ micro/macro doming machine at Fespa.

The firm is focusing on these devices on its booth (B3L-B40) to inform companies that are currently doming, or considering doming, that they will soon need to switch to a mercury-free resin system due to changes in European regulations.

“As of this year mercury salts are not going to be made anymore, so it’s going to be harder for doming resin manufacturers to source them. It’s therefore important for companies to find a mercury-free doming resin system,” said Royal Adhesives & Sealants Canada sales manager, Specialty Graphics Division, Keith Bechamp.

“People want to be able to maintain the same level of productivity but they also need the mercury-free component of the resin to comply with European regulations.”

Bechamp added the firm’s kit, which is already commercially available, produces quality comparable to mercury-based doming systems.

The E-Dome 8E-455 is not subject to any of the issues associated with traditional mercury-free doming, the company said, such as strict monitoring of the temperature and humidity in the doming environment, or the need for expensive vacuum tanks to remove any moisture from the resin before moving onto the mixing and dispensing part of the operation.

Advantages of Royal Adhesives’ kit are that it does not require vacuum degassing, it is not as sensitive to moisture as traditional mercury-free doming resin systems and it can be tack-free in around five minutes. Furthermore, it can be fully cured in 1.5 hours at 50ºC and it is automotive approved.

Doming technology can be used for applications including automotive badging and decals, appliance and tool nameplates, signage and POP displays, bottle labels, apparel and wall stickers.
