The 100ppm machines, which were installed at the Hull-based firm’s premises in January, were bought from Xerox reseller Xeretec and have replaced a Xerox Color 1000.

The sheetfed SRA3-format digital toner 2100 can print on stocks of 52-350gsm and offers finishes such as pearlescent, metallic and textured.

Studio manager Stephen Connor said: “We like the quality we get from the Versants, which have a more matt finish and look much better than the high level of sheen given off by the 1000.

“We first came across the Versant 2100 on a trip to the States and thought that two of those in place of our 1000 would give us a fallback position.

“A lot of our jobs are on 48-hour turnarounds and we don’t want to be caught short if we get a breakdown at the wrong time of the day.”

He added: “By buying two of the same machine we’ve got a certain amount of resilience built in straight away.

“In the first week we printed 550 copies of a 28-page job in a couple of hours. We ran the job on both Versants by splitting the workload in half between the two machines and then put it straight into finishing and it was out the door and off to London that night.”

The business chose not to look at any alternative suppliers because it was happy with the ongoing service and support it received from Xeretec.

“Xeretec work very well with us and for us, they understand our business and what we want to do with it,” said Connor.

Wyke Printers, which has 45 staff and a turnover of around £3.5m, also operates two six-colour B1 Manroland 706 litho presses. It produces work including brochures and educational manuals for a range of businesses.
