Woods of Perth ceases trading after 180 years

Woods of Perth has ceased trading and the remaining 14 staff have been made redundant just over a week after it was put into administration.

A spokeswoman for administrator Pricewaterhouse-Coopers has confirmed that the £6.5m-turnover firm is no longer trading.

Some of the 180-year-old company’s 71 former employees have been taken on by other print companies.

J Thompson Colour Printers (JTCP) has taken on seven sales, customer service and pre-press staff and has been in contact with a number of its customers.

JTCP managing director Kevin Creechan said: "We have secured the services of a business team from Woods of Perth to provide continuity to their customers and strengthen our offering.

"We are in the process of securing premises in Perth to house the new team and ensure that there is a local presence similar to what we currently have in Inverness and Edinburgh."

Elsewhere, Paul Anderson, managing director at Dundee-based Fairprint, said the company had taken on three staff so far and was looking to take on more in the coming weeks.

Woods of Perth went into administration on 28 May, citing the general economic downturn and lack of demand for high-quality products as the reason behind the collapse. The following week, 57 of the company's 71 staff were sent home as the administrators continued to seek a buyer.

The Perth-based business was established in 1830 and provided quality printing services.
