The London-based litho and digital print firm bought the secondhand 2006 model, which was installed at its premises last month, for around £260,000. It joins an existing five-colour SM 74 and replaces a two-colour machine that was part exchanged.
“We changed the two-colour for a five-colour to give us a bit more firepower, which was needed because of increased demand for work,” said managing director Rob Allen.
The new press has been equipped with ink coverage and ink zone calculation software PressProfiler from Prepress UK. This examines digital files received from any workflow and generates ink key pre-setting data to save set-up time on changeovers.
“PressProfiler has given us faster makereadies and we had all of the clamps levelled up as well so that as soon as the plates go on the jobs are in fit. We’ve also got less wastage and it’s better for the environment, which is important to our clients,” said Allen.
“We’ve also done some work on our older SM 74. We’ve had all new rollers put into it and we’ve had a full clean done on the machine. That’s going to be profiled with PressProfiler too, which will speed everything up.”
Woodrow Press has 12 staff and a turnover of close to £2m. Around 80% of its work comes from the financial sector, with investment banks being a major source of business. It also does general commercial work for a range of other industries.
