Wire-binding start-up looks to bring 'new blood' to industry

A new wire-binding specialist has started up in Croydon, West Sussex, with the aim of bringing 'new blood' into the industry.

Ideal Finishing was founded by Paul Forrester and Chris Carden, both former production directors at Fastnet Finishing before it closed in August last year.

Around 90% of the company's work will be wire and spiral binding, but it will also offer shrink wrapping, guillotining and collating. Over the next few months laminating and encapsulating will also be added.

Ideal has bought a range of new, refurbished and secondhand machinery and officially began operating on 4 January 2010.

The company currently employs five staff and, according to Forrester, it has opted for youth over experience.

"I don’t believe you can teach old dogs new tricks so we are bring some new blood into the industry. They are willing to learn and we will teach them the way we do things," he said.

"There definitely seems to be a demand for wire-binding, I talked to a printer in Woking and he was using someone in Birmingham. It may seem a Dutch way of doing things given the financial climate, but there is a place for us."
