The company, which was launched by TJ in 1999 with an Oc DemandStream 8090, has become the UK's first book printer to purchase one of the manufacturer's new generation high-speed web printers, the VarioStream 9000 series.
TJ International chief executive Angus Clark, who was at the show to sign up for the new machine, said he aimed to increase sales at TJI to 2m by 2009. "We launched TJI in 1999 with Oc and said we would get to 10% of [overall group] turnover within five years. Now we want to lift that to 20% within another five years," he said.
The modular VarioStream will be used for short-run book production, an average run is about 50 but it can go as low as 10, and will enable the company to move up to colour production in the future. "We will initially run one-back-one and then move up to two-back-two," said Clark, but he added that there were no plans to use the machine for full-colour covers and jackets.
TJI's premises have been expanded to make room for the new printer, which arrives in July, along with a new Wohlenberg City perfect binding line, also purchased at Drupa. Both Wohlenberg and Oc form part of the PrintCity collaborative exhibit at the show.
