The Redcar-based company secured £80,000 from the Corus Group-subsidiary, which is helping secure jobs and fund investment in areas where steel is produced. The money allowed Theakston to convert its unused two-colour Crabtree Sovereign press to print UV.
The company ordered high-tech UV lamps to be made in Germany to exact specifications. The firm, which also houses a five colour Crabtree Sovereign large format press, will add the technology to its 20,500sq ft factory later this month.
Michael Theakston, managing director of Theakston Print, said that the investment will allow his company to sell UV services to local printers and UV products to new and existing customers. He is also planning to take on a new apprentice.
He added: “The funding is to help existing businesses expand, and it has been most useful. We’ve felt the effects of the recession, but are hoping that this investment will change all that.
“We’ve already received interest from local printers and companies that want UV products.”
Nick Johnson, UK Steel Enterprise regional executive, said: “We’ve known Michael for a number of years and he has always impressed us with his ambition and determination.
“He worked for a local printer for 16 years and when that company went into liquidation he bought the assets, saved six people’s jobs, rebranded the company and turned a failing business into one making a profit within a year.
“UK Steel Enterprise has supported business growth and job creation in steel areas for more than three decades now and, despite the current economic situation, we have just had our busiest year ever for investment.
“It is especially pleasing that this investment will lead to a number of new jobs, including one for an apprentice once the new technology is installed.”
Theakston Press was established in 2006 and employs six staff. Approximately 85% of its products are for the retail sector, including large format in-store posters, PoS, litho laminated materials and digital prints and posters.
Theakston's Corus work win adds UV opportunity
Theakston Print is expecting to double its turnover in the next 12 months after securing an investment from UK Steel Enterprise and discovering a market for UV-coated products.
