Smurfit in sale talks

Jefferson Smurfit, the Irish paper and packaging group, says it is in preliminary talks with a third party that may or may not lead to an offer being made for part or all of the company.

Swedish packaging group SCA immediately issued a statement saying that it hadnt made an offer for Smurfit.

Stora Enso and International Paper have been tipped as potential suitors.

Industry sources have also suggested that Mondi and DS Smith could be interested in buying Smurfits UK operations.
