Scottish printer files for liquidation

A 35-year-old Scottish printer has gone into liquidation with the loss of more than 30 full-time staff and "quite a few" casual employees.

A source at the company told printweek.com that staff at Buccleuch Printers, in Hawick in the Borders region, were told on Friday 25 January that the company would shut down on 1 February as it had gone into voluntary liquidation.

"We're still here, working until the end,"  She said. However, she was unclear whether staff would be paid. "The liquidators will deal with that," she added.

"It's the print market at the moment – it's not been that great."

According to the BBC, South of Scotland MSP Christine Grahame is to ask Scottish Enterprise Borders to help those affected and is seeking a meeting with Buccleuch management to explain why the decision was taken.

Buccleuch Printers closed down its warehouse facility in Galashiels just over a year ago in order to concentrate operations in Hawick.

The closure comes at an inopportune time for the region. Clothing label Barbour shut its Galashiels site recently with the loss of 46 jobs.

Buccleuch Printers was the first printer in Scotland to win Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) accreditation.
