The Swindon-based firm took delivery of the machine in August and followed it up with the installation of a retrofitted Foliant multi-functional Inprinting Unit in September.
The Mercury 530 features an integrated Heidelberg suction feeder and a high-speed bump separator. The B2-plus device has a maximum speed of 25m/min.
The Inprinting Unit, which allows varnish or foil to be applied to pre-printed black toner, is said to make these finishes fast and affordable for short-run and personalised print applications.
The kit was all supplied by Intelligent Finishing Systems (IFS) and cost just over £50,000 in total.
The Mercury 530SF has replaced a Bagel laminator, which has been sold on, and joins other equipment at the firm’s 743sqm site including a Komori Lithrone LS four-colour B2 press with inline coating, a Xerox Color J75 digital press, an HP Scitex FB500 and a Summa cutter.
Rumbold Holland joint managing director Wayne Rumbold said: “Our Bagel was ideal for short-run lamination but it was only single-sided and very slow running so we needed to upgrade.
“We’re unusual for a B2 printer because we do quite a lot of long runs. We’d previously been sending out the longer run work and can now do that in-house. We’ve already put 400,000 sheets through it.”
The company looked at alternatives from Komfi and Autobond but Rumbold said the firm picked the Foliant due to its existing relationship with IFS as well as the machine’s price, ease of use and ability to laminate double-sided.
Rumbold Holland, which has 16 staff and a turnover of £1.7m, produces a wide variety of work from direct mail and brochures to book covers and binders for clients in the public, financial services and retail sectors.
