RR Donnelley snaps up US catalogue press

RR Donnelley, the worlds largest print group, has continued its acquisition drive with a definitive agreement to buy Spencer Press, a US-based catalogue printer.

"Spencer Press is an ideal fit," said RR Donnelley chief executive Mark Angelson. "It is an admired brand whose geographic match with RR Donnelley's catalogue resources could not be better."

This latest buy is Donnelley's, a potential Polestar suitor, fifth in seven months.

The Spencer deal, for an undisclosed sum, is expected to close in Q4 2005. According to US reports the Maine-based firm has revenues of around 49m ($86m).

As well as catalogues Spencer, founded in 1940, also handles commercial work such as booklets and inserts and direct mail in its 40,000 sqm factory. The web printer's firepower includes two 48pp Heidelberg M-3000s, 32pp and 16pp M-1000 and two 8pp M-110Bs.

"Its respected capabilities will allow us to better serve both organisations' customers, and will create fresh cross-selling opportunities," said Angelson.
