Retired print veteran flies out to Haiti to help out with Red Cross

Printweek.com forum regular 'Ivor Binder' has put his retirement on hold and flown out to Haiti to offer his help to those suffering in the aftermath of last week's 7.0-magnitude earthquake (13 January).

Logging in on a laptop borrowed from the Red Cross, he reported in to the forums yesterday to make a direct appeal to the print industry.

"As a guy who can drive a forklift, has a first aid certificate and can shift boxes all day long, I've decided in retirement to... come out to Haiti to help shift stuff, dig holes and see what can be done. It's a heck of a way to go dry and detox for a bit, but it reminds you what life is all about. These people out here suffer," he said.

"It's hot, dirty, grim, scary, emotional, tragic, unsanitised, awful, but in need. The Red Cross is letting me onto this laptop for a short time to make a small appeal to the best trade in the UK. Let's face it, bankers are knack-all use, so avoid a night at the pub and send that."

He says he is sleeping on a floor at night under a mosquito net and working 15-hour days.
