Print's Top 500 shows profitability split

<i>PrintWeek</i>'s annual <i>Top 500</i> survey, starkly reveals the widening gap between print's winners and losers.

The collapse in demand for financial printing, for example, is evident in Bowne International's latest results for the year to December 2001, with the firm's sales falling by more than 50% to 25.4m, while its 9.1m pre-tax profit in 2000 was translated into a 6.4m loss in 2001.

Duncan Holdings, which shut down its web printing business in summer last year (having once been in the UK's top 100 printing companies) has seen its turnover fall from just under 30m to 8.2m, putting it at number 264. Conversely the company's operating performance has improved massively, with margins rising from 4.8% to 22.7%.

"Five of the top 20 groups in the UK are now either print managers or have significant print management interests," said PrintWeek editor in chief Jo Francis.

"But the most profitable businesses are rarely the largest and the new profitability rankings are an illuminating read."
