Sidney Bobb, chairman of the BAPC, the co-owner of the exhibition, said: "While our members widely support the need for digitally focused events, it has become clear that in the current economic climate a national event is not sustainable."
Litho Supplies joint managing director Gerry Mulvaney wasn't surprised by the news and hoped it would make Gary Swinford, managing director of organiser Trade Events, rethink the show's location.
"Gary has organised some remarkably good shows, particularly Print UK in London. But even if it wasn't going head-to-head with Northprint it would have taken a lot of persuading to get me to the NEC," he said.
Swinford said next spring would be the "wrong time" to hold the show, but added: "This is hopefully not the end for Print UK and I still believe it's the way forward for the industry and the NEC is the right location."
Although Mulvaney didn't expect the same attendance levels at Northprint as past shows, he believed the event's strong pedigree would ensure its success.
The cancellation follows last week's news that Heidelberg had opted not to exhibit at Print UK but would attend Northprint from 13-15 May.
"Print UK was not intended to run head-to-head with Northprint, but an organiser doesn't have a say as it depends on availability," added Bobb.
