Development of the next version of the PPAs pass4press specification for digital advertising is well underway.
It will be launched at the PPAs digital production conference at Le Mridien Grosvenor House on 16 November.
Earlier this month the sub committee responsible for putting together the next version met for the first time, co-chaired by Emap UK print and repro buyer Andy Franks and Debbie Read of IPC.
Weve pulled together a broader committee this time to take into consideration the requirements of publishers, repro houses and printers, said Franks.
The 20 strong team includes representatives from Graphic Facilities, Colour Systems, Argent Colour, Polestar, St Ives, Adobe and CreoScitex.
Under consideration for the next version will be whether it can be opened up to include different versions of PDF including PDF/X and PDF RS.
Weve got to make it as inclusive as possible, said Franks. There are differing viewpoints, but weve got the remit to cover the whole workflow.
Issues to be addressed in the next version include pre-flighting specifications and proofing. The standard will specify the requirements of each, but not tie in to any single products.
We cant lock people into one product, it would be irresponsible of the PPA, said Franks.
It is also meeting with RIP developers to see whether it can certify RIPs that correctly interpret pass4press files to ensure files are processed consistently regardless of equipment used.
Version one is being actively used and the PPA is keen for more people to try it and provide feedback to improve the next version.
