Group chief executive and chairman Bob Hodgson said the appointments reflected the groups need to have executive directors that can develop and implement strategic plans.
Samson joined Pillans & Wilson as managing director in 1999 following its acquisition by the Ormolu Group, and played a key role in the acquisition of Waddies (PrintWeek, 24 May).
Gardner was appointed as managing director of Trafford Press some four months ago, and oversaw its move to new premises in Trafford Park.
Gardner also worked for print company Williams Lea and prior to joining Ormolu was regional director for stationery supplier Guilbert UK.
Apart from chief executive and chairman Bob Hodgson, the Ormolu board includes financial director and company secretary Andrew Fishwick, and two non-executive directors, Michael Denny and Sidney Donald.
