Opus installs bespoke inline enveloping kit

Transactional mailer Opus Trust Marketing has boosted its enveloping capabilities with a seven-figure investment in CMC envelope inserting machines.

The Leicester-based company installed a CMC 9000 combi-mail line with twin-tray capabilities at the end of last year, and a second machine is currently being commissioned.

Each line comprises a CMC 9000 combined with a CMC JWR paper-wrapper and twin-tray output management system. The entire line can run at up to 20,000 cycles per hour, although the 9000 and JWR are both capable of running at up to 30,000 cycles per hour individually.

The lines will allow Opus to insert into pre-made envelopes or wrap envelopes inline.

According to operations director Evan Bath, Opus worked with CMC to tailor the machine to meet its exact requirements.

"We are a company that likes to push boundaries and CMC were very supportive," he said. "They came up with a number of systems and would ask ‘will this work for you?’ Eventually they came up with a system that will make a huge difference for us."

The machine will also give Opus flexibility when enveloping, as well as opening doors for additional variable data.

Opus’s enclosing lines are able to take envelopes through pre-made, or create envelopes from flat sheets; something which Bath believes will help its smaller customers.

He said: "We can go envelope or paper wrap, it is identical to an envelope. It doesn’t make much difference to our larger customers, they can order envelopes in bulk. But smaller customers have issues with space, so to be able to produce envelopes inline gives us an extra string to our bow."

At the end of last year, Opus’s number of employees swelled by 30 to around 200 when it took on around 35% of failed mailing house Mailcom (UK). It has a turnover of around £13m.
