Brighton commercial printer One Digital has installed a new Xerox Iridesse fitted with fluorescent pink to update its print room and gear up for growth.

The new press arrived just before Christmas and was put straight into production after replacing another Iridesse, which had reached the end of its five-year contract. 

Fitted with an extra-large feeder and stacker and the extra colour channel, the new Iridesse will help One Digital expand the range of applications it runs through the machine, while up-selling customers on its bright new colour gamut.

“It just gives us another string to our bow,” managing director Steve Poland told Printweek.

“We’ve been running quite a lot of greeting card work through it, because of the new stacker. As for the new colour – we’re always trying to bring our clients the latest offerings from our suppliers, and if there’s something available we need to give our customers the best chance of bringing something unique to market. Everyone’s looking to stand out.”

The new engine has gone in alongside One Digital’s iGen5 press in the digital department, complemented by the firm’s Heidelberg Speedmaster 74 and a wide-format section with Epson 8600, HP Z6800 alongside several smaller Epsons and a Canon.

Alongside the firm’s finishing kit, it makes for a compact working environment in the company’s 325sqm Brighton facility.

“We’re literally rammed to the rafters, but we’re a very small and productive team,” Poland said of his 15-strong team.

“Most of our staff have been here more than 10 years, and some, like myself, have been here 20 or 30 years. We’re an older workforce, but the skill level and experience we have [is strong] – there’s a lot involved.”

Having shrunk slightly during Covid, the company is finally feeling ready to expand again, Poland added, with the new Iridesse helping to start that push towards £1.8m from its current £1.4m.

“We’re looking to push our online presence, and get online more – but our USP is our service and responsiveness,” he said.

“That’s what we build on, and that’s what customers are willing to pay for. We’re a very small team, very nimble, and we respond quickly. Going forward, we’re hoping to increase sales, increase our offering, and build an online storefront to help the turnover as well.”
