Massive response to PAS 2020 consultation delays publication of findings

The publication of the results of the consultation on the controversial PAS 2020 proposed standard has been delayed due to the massive response from the industry.

Alex Walsh, head of postal affairs at the DMA, said the industry body had initially hoped to publish the results of the consultation in late September or early October, however, they are now more likely to come out in December.

"There was a high response to the consultation and we received over 600 comments," he said. "The result is that we are delayed as we take on board all the feedback."

The BSI-led proposals were released over the summer and heralded a backlash in the direct mail industry, which thought the plans were too constrictive and did not focus on the right issues.

However, Walsh reaffirmed his belief that the industry needs to be seen to be self-regulating or it will have regulation forced upon it.

"This is a voluntary code," he said. "It is also intended to be aspirational and give mailing houses and direct marketers something to work towards."

The results of the consultation will now be published in December.

PAS 2020 is the standard for reducing the environmental impact of direct marketing.
