4,000 copies of the first issue were sold in shops and kiosks across the Spanish capital on Friday (31 May) at a cover price of €2 (£1.77), with the second issue published on Saturday and the third yesterday, following Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
Friday’s edition featured an eight-page Champions League supplement, while Saturday’s edition included a 12-page Footie Echo Champions League special and the Sunday edition provided comprehensive coverage of the final, and its aftermath.
The Liverpool Echo, which is owned by Reach, used Bermont, the existing printer in Madrid that Reach uses for the international edition of the Mirror, to produce the souvenir editions.
Reach circulation director John Howard said: “Given that the Champions League Cup final was happening in Madrid, we had this idea to do three special editions for all our fans who have travelled down for the game.
“We took a slot at the end of the run, i.e. after all the other British press including the Daily Mirror. We changed the front page [to say] Madrid edition and we maxed it at a 64pp.
“For people who had travelled all the way for the game, it was like a little piece of home for them - they loved it."
Thousands of Liverpool fans flew out to Madrid for the match, which saw the Reds secure a sixth Champions League victory, following previous wins in 1977, 1978, 1981, 1984 and 2005.
