The Bristol-based printer installed a Ricoh Pro C901 digital colour press in January and followed that with an investment in a Ricoh 8100s mono digital press, which was installed last month.

The company bought the 8100s, which replaced an old Xerox Nuvera 120, to give it a dedicated ISO 27001 print, finishing, insertion and mailing unit.

It also invested in Duplo finishing equipment including a DC-645 slitter-cutter-creaser, which was installed earlier this week, and a Duetto System Pro bookletmaker, which will be installed next week.

The DC-645 allows finishing in one pass and incorporates bar-code recognition for integrity while the Duetto System will let the firm finish from flat sheets to booklets in one process.

“Not only can we manage short-run digital finishing in one pass, we can also provide dynamic variable data images and text in leaflet or booklet format. We see the personalisation element as a key benefit to our clients,” said sales director Becky O’Brien.

The company also looked at other finishing kit from companies including Watkiss and Morgana but decided on the Duplo kit because of its ease of use.

“I think these investments will enable us to be more targeted with our sales,” said operations manager Andy Donley.

“We’re a B2 printer but our bookletmaking capabilities were restricted to our Muller saddle-stitcher, whereas now with the Duetto System, we can offer square-back facilities.”

Kingsdown’s customers include medium-sized to large businesses across the UK including charities and financial and greetings card companies. The firm employs 50 staff and has a turnover of £6.5m.

Earlier this year it became the first company in the UK to gain certification to the newest ISO 27001 standard, ISO 27001:2013, which centres around information and data security.
