Ink Shop buys digital press and boasts record sales

The Ink Shop has moved into same-day printing with the installation of a second Konica System 18 digital press on the back of a 20% year-on-year sales increase.

A £400,000 expansion programme has begun at the colour printer, which was forced to rebuild parts of its site, following an alleged arson attack in December last year at its production plant in Cumbernauld, Scotland.

The attack destroyed the firm’s main office facilities and seriously damaged two other offices and a reception area.

The company has now spent £105,000 on the Konica press and has allocated £60,000 for mezzanine flooring, racking and storage at the site.

A new B2 10-colour press is also being scheduled for delivery in 2010, although a supplier for this has not yet been decided.

Managing director Stuart Mason announced last month that the company had achieved its highest sales on record, although he declined to comment on the exact figure.

He said: "We were up more than 20% on our previous best. The downside is with increasing costs and irresponsible pricing, this had reduced profit margins, but we are still delighted nonetheless."

Speaking to PrintWeek this week, he said: "We have worked extremely hard over the last 17 years and built it into a fantastic business. We were devastated by the attack.

"I have a responsibility to decent and honest staff, suppliers and customers, so we have come back stronger and our March figures prove that."

He added: "2010 should hold better times for those who think smart, adapt and survive. For us, we will batten down the hatches and cut away dead wood and weak performers."

The company also announced plans to invest in an additional four-colour B3 press later this year.
