- An audit will determine which wastes can generate income. You may be surprised; baled cardboard can raise up to £40 per tonne. Recycling can generate additional income, so make sure you are making the most of your waste
- Check your waste is going into suitably sized containers to minimise transport costs and optimise reusability
- Consider installing kit such as balers for cardboard, polythene and ink tins to condense waste. Baled waste has a higher commodity value. Balers cost from £5,000
- Get your waste management company to audit your waste at least once per year to ensure disposal costs are minimised and income is maximised
- Using more than one contractor to dispose of waste may not be the most cost-effective solution
- Train staff and put in place systems to ensure valuable time is not lost moving waste around the site before collection
- Ensure you are compliant with all current hazardous waste and landfill legislation. Fines can be costly
- Don’t let standards slip. It is easy to lose control of waste management and this is where potential savings can evaporate
