24 staff – more than half of the Penrith-based firm’s 44-strong workforce – completed a course winding across Cumbria over seven days from 2 to 10 July.
Including cycling, running and walking, the fundraising initiative was undertaken both in recognition of the help Macmillan provided for one of the company’s longest-serving employees, Malcolm Warwick, who passed away in 2006, and also to mark the firm’s 140th anniversary.
The relay started in Penrith with stopping off points in Carlisle, Borrowdale, Keswick, Milnthorpe, Kendal and Ullswater, before finishing back at Penrith on 10 July.
H&H Reeds Printers project and marketing manager Molly Blackburn, and account and marketing assistant Katie Thompson, who organised the initiative, said they had planned for most eventualities but did not expect a heatwave.
Blackburn, who started the relay off with a six-mile run though Penrith, said: “This event was a true success and an honour to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, remembering our long-serving director Malcolm Warwick.
“We have been so lucky with this weather and we are delighted that almost every member of staff wanted to carry on after completing their leg of the relay, showing the true determination of each member.
“We have met many customers on the route, and we had great engagement with Cranstons, David Allen, The Cumberland and Lake District Estates, to name a few.”
Blackburn added staff were “really engaged and enjoyed taking part” and that talks are already underway to do something similar next year, though a chosen charity has not yet been determined.
